Surcharge Signage And Display Requirements
If you add a surcharge to transactions, you must clearly display this to customers before they pay. This article explains what your signage must include and how to get compliant stickers or templates.
What are my signage obligations?
Under the Retail Payment System Act 2022, you must:
-
Display signage near your EFTPOS terminal and point of sale
-
Use a font size of at least 10pt Arial
-
Clearly state the surcharge amount, rate, or how it is calculated
-
Avoid attributing the surcharge to Eftpos NZ, a card scheme, or any third party
-
Offer at least one surcharge-free payment option
For online and phone orders, the surcharge must also be disclosed before the transaction is completed.
Where should I place the sign?
Place the sign where the customer can easily see it before presenting their card — for example:
-
Next to your EFTPOS terminal
-
On or near the till or counter
