Payment Networks
Your payment network works behind the scenes every time you process a payment, moving funds from your customer's account through to your acquiring bank.
There are two payment networks to choose from in New Zealand: the Verifone network and Paymark. Your EFTPOS terminal connects to one of them to authorise every card transaction.
Paymark traded as Worldline NZ from 2021 until the business was acquired by Cuscal in 2026 and returned to the Paymark name. If you have documentation referring to Worldline, it is describing the same network.
Differences between the networks
Terminals on the Verifone network and terminals on Paymark run different software, so the terminal screens look different. If you are not sure which network you are on, you can check your terminal screens here.
The functionality available on your terminal can also differ depending on your network and your bank. Offline Mode and Electronic Vouchers, for example, work slightly differently on each network.
What Paymark handles directly
If your terminal connects to Paymark, some changes are made by Paymark rather than by us. You will need to contact Paymark directly to:
- Change or amend your settlement time or settlement window
- Request transaction lists
- Change your receipt header information
- Change your refund password
On the Verifone network, you can update all of these by calling 0800 EFTPOS.
Advantages of connecting to the Verifone network
Eftpos NZ is the only EFTPOS terminal provider in New Zealand that also operates its own payment network.
- One provider, one bill. Your device and network connection come under one contract and one monthly payment.
- One number for support. Call 0800 EFTPOS for anything to do with your terminal or your network connection. You do not need to work out which provider to contact first.
- Faster configuration changes. We can push terminal configuration changes across the network on demand rather than waiting for an overnight update.
- Built-in resilience. We run an active-active setup across two geographically separate data centres. If an issue is detected at one, your terminal switches to the other automatically.
Compliance and security
Our network is compliant with Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standards, and transactions are protected end to end using hardware-based security.
We also guarantee your payment compliance for the duration of your contract. If an update is needed to keep your terminal compliant, we provide it at no charge.
