Why can’t I perform a status check?

Performing a card status check allows you to check that a credit card is valid, i.e. that the card is not blocked due to being stolen, or that the card details are for a legitimate credit card. This feature works by sending a $0.00 pre-auth to the card’s issuing bank to make sure the credit card is valid and that there are no blocks on the card i.e. the card is not stolen. You can use status check if you don’t want to hold funds on your customer’s card, you simply want to check the card is legitimate.

Card status check doesn’t work on every terminal or with every card, however. Depending on which network your terminal is connected to, which bank you have your merchant facility with and the card being checked you might find the terminal returns a ‘Function not supported’ error code.

1. Your acquiring bank

If your terminal is connected to the Verifone network and your merchant facility is with Westpac, ASB, Kiwibank or BNZ, you won’t be able to use card status check.

2. The card issuer

Some card issuers decline $0.00 transactions, which means card status checks will not work with these cards.
